The Robertsoni is a hardy robust species
with prominent blue-green spotting over the body and
fins (especially when they mature). Not fussy about
water conditions or diet, they can be kept with other
robust species in a large aquarium, preferably with some
hiding places. Native to Southern Mexico and Guatemala,
males can grow to 20-25cm, the females remain slightly
smaller. |

The Agassizi occurs in a number of different
colour forms in the Amazon River region, including this
popular type. The term double red refers to males'
red dorsal and red caudal (tail) fins. Males grow
to 7-8cm, females are smaller. Apistogramma's are
well suited to planted aquaria with fish such as small
tetras. They prefer clean, soft slightly acidic
water and should receive regular feedings of live or
frozen foods. Using Amazon Water Conditioner is
also beneficial. |

This
is another variable species, many colour forms are
known. The double red is the most popular type,
with very striking red spotted dorsal and tail fins. Males
develop spectacular finnage and grow to 8cm, females
are smaller in size. Apistogramma's are well
suited to planted aquaria with fish such as small
tetras. They prefer clean, soft slightly acidic
water and should receive regular feedings of live
or frozen foods. Using Amazon Water Conditioner

This is an imposing robust species native
to Central America. Best kept in large aquaria
with similar sized American Cichlids, Plecostomus etc. Provide
plenty of hiding places as they can be territorial. Like
most American Cichlids, the Black Belt's colours intensify
as they mature. Grows to 25-30cm. |

Native to northern South America, the Blue
Acara is a hardy and undemanding aquarium fish with nice
blue spangling. Relatively peaceful for its size,
it is well suited to community aquaria containing similar
sized fishes. Both sexes are very similar in appearance,
males develop slightly longer fins. Usually grows
to 13-15cm. They eat all standard aquarium foods,
and are not fussy about water chemistry. |

This very peaceful dwarf cichlid is ideal for any
planted community aquarium housing species such as
tetras and gouramies. Native to Bolivia and Brazil,
nowadays most stock in the aquarium trade is commercially
farmed. Bolivian Butterflys grow to about 8cm,
both sexes are very similar in appearance. Most
standard aquarium foods are eaten, but they also appreciate
regular feeds of live or frozen foods.

This graceful looking dwarf cichlid is very difficult
to breed, so most aquarium stock is exported from South
America. Mature males are very attractive with
green spangled bodies and a beautiful lyretail, they
grow to 7-8cm. The smaller females are less gaudy
but still attractive with dark patterned bodies and
red pelvic fins. Crenicara are well suited to
planted aquaria with fish such as small tetras. They
prefer clean, soft, slightly acidic water and should
receive regular feedings of live or frozen foods. Using

Chocolate Cichlids are a very large, hardy,
peaceful species native to Brazil. Their chocolate
and reddish-brown colours intensify with age, males may
grow to 24-30cm, females remain smaller. Best kept
in large aquaria either on their own or with similar
sized fishes that are not overly aggressive. |

Firemouths are a popular aquarium fish, with their
fiery red colour, active displaying and hardy nature. With
false eye spots on their gills, Firemouths may flare
their gills out at anything that threatens them, to
create an impression they are much greater in size. They
are well suited to aquaria containing similar sized
or slightly smaller species and are one of the
more peaceful Central American Cichlids. Native
to Yucatan in Mexico and Guatamala, they grow to 12-15cm.

known as "earth-eaters", these fish often forage by sifting
the substrate. The Brasiliensis is one of the easiest
of this group to keep and it also breeds quite readily. Well
suited to large aquaria with other hardy fish of similar
size such as Oscars, Plecostomus etc. Larger specimens
are excellent display fish, with prominent mother of
pearl spots all over their body and fins. Males
can grow to 20-25cm, the females remain slightly smaller. |

Red Devils are an extremely robust species,
native to Nicaragua. Highly responsive to their
owners, very large specimens are often kept as a single
pet fish. Adult colouration begins at 6-10cm, and
each individual can vary considerably. They can
be extremely aggressive (particularly solitary individuals),
but can also be readily kept in very large aquaria with
other large American Cichlids, provide plenty of hiding
places. Males grow to 25-30cm, females are usually
smaller. |

Native
to Ecuador and Peru, adult Rivulatus are very impressive
fish with green edged scales, and nicely patterned
dorsal and tail fins with a wide gold edging. Hardy
and easy to keep, they can be territorial, particularly
when breeding. One of the more popular larger
American Cichlids, they can be kept with hardy species
of similar size in large aquaria. Males can
grow to 18-20cm, females remain smaller. They
start to colour up from 5cm onwards.

The Severum is a popular large Cichlid with
a quiet, peaceful disposition. Both sexes at first
are very similar in appearance, mature males gradually
developing scribbled markings over the head and brighter
colour. They prefer vegetable based/green foods
and enjoy treats such as lettuce leaves. Native
to northern South America, they can grow to 15-20cm. |

This is a hardy species, quite attractive with both
sexes having large blue-green spotting over the body
and fins. Easy to care for, Texas can be kept
with other robust species in a large aquarium with
plenty of hiding places. Native to Mexico and
